What Does Equality of Men and Women Mean?
In Australia, men and women have equal rights and are equal under the law. This means:
- Men and women have the same right to vote and to stand for Parliament
- Men and women have equal access to education and employment
- Men and women can own property, make their own financial decisions, and enter into contracts
- Men and women have equal rights and responsibilities in marriage and family life
- Discrimination on the basis of sex is against the law in many areas of public life, including work and education
A Proud History
Australia was a world leader in women's political rights. In 1894, South Australia gave women the right to vote and to stand for parliament — one of the first places in the world to do so. In 1902, women gained the right to vote in federal elections and stand for federal Parliament. Today, women serve at every level of Australian public life, including as Prime Minister, Governor-General, High Court judges and state Premiers.

Equality at Work
Employers must not treat people differently because of their sex, pregnancy, or family responsibilities. Men and women are entitled to be paid fairly for the same work, and sexual harassment in the workplace is unlawful.
