A 2-Week Study Plan for the Australian Citizenship Test
A practical day-by-day 2-week study plan for the Australian citizenship test, covering every topic, the values section and full mock tests.
Got your appointment letter and only two weeks to prepare? Don't panic. Two weeks of focused, daily study is enough for most people to pass — as long as you study the right things in the right order. Here is a simple day-by-day plan. Aim for around 30–60 minutes a day.
Before You Start
- Download or open the official booklet Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond from the Department of Home Affairs website
- Focus on the testable sections — the parts of the booklet that test questions are drawn from
- Take one practice test on Day 1 to see your starting point — do not worry about your score
Week 1: Learn the Content
Day 1 — Baseline and Overview
Take a full 20-question mock test without studying first. Note your score and which topics felt hardest. Then skim the whole booklet once to see how it is organised.
Day 2 — Australia and Its People (Part 1)
Study Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, early settlement, the First Fleet and Federation. Practise questions on this topic afterwards.
Day 3 — Australia and Its People (Part 2)
Study states, territories and capitals, national symbols, flags, national days and the national anthem. Make a small list of dates and colours to remember.
Day 4 — Democratic Beliefs, Rights and Liberties
Study parliamentary democracy, the rule of law, living peacefully, respect for all individuals, freedom of speech, association and religion, and equality. Learn the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship.
Day 5 — Government and the Law (Part 1)
Study the Constitution, referendums, the three levels of government, and the separation of powers.
Day 6 — Government and the Law (Part 2)
Study Parliament, the Senate and House of Representatives, the King, the Governor-General, the Prime Minister, elections, courts and the law.
Day 7 — Rest and Light Review
Take a break from heavy study. Do a short quiz or two, and re-read any notes you made during the week.
Week 2: Practise and Strengthen
Day 8 — Australian Values Deep Dive
Remember: all five values questions must be answered correctly. Spend a full session on values: equality, respect, freedom, the rule of law, English as the national language, and a fair go.
Day 9 — Full Mock Test and Review
Take a timed full mock test. Review every wrong answer and write down the correct fact in your own words.
Day 10 — Weakest Topic
Go back to the topic where you made the most mistakes. Re-read that section of the booklet and do targeted practice questions.
Day 11 — Mixed Practice
Do several short mixed quizzes to practise switching between topics — just like the real test.
Day 12 — Full Mock Test and Values Check
Take another timed mock test. Check your values answers carefully. Aim for 18 or more out of 20.
Day 13 — Final Review
Review your mistake list, key dates, and values. Take one final mock test if you feel like it, but don't overload yourself.
Day 14 — Test Day Preparation
Keep it light. Check your appointment letter, prepare your original documents, plan your route, and get a good night's sleep.
Tips to Make the Plan Work
- Consistency beats cramming — a little every day is better than a lot on one day
- Understand, don't just memorise — questions may be worded differently from what you practised
- Study in both languages if it helps — understand the idea in your first language, then answer in English
- Track your scores to see real progress
